The Influence of Cloud-Based Collaboration Tools on Productivity in Remote Work Environments

The rapid shift toward remote and hybrid work has elevated cloud-based collaboration tools—such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, Zoom, and Google Workspace—from supporting technologies to core work infrastructures. This paper examines how these tools influence individual and team productivity in remote work environments. Drawing on pre-2024 empirical studies of remote work, digital collaboration, and cloud adoption, it synthesizes evidence on communication efficiency, coordination quality, knowledge sharing, and employee well-being. A conceptual architecture of cloud-enabled remote work and a productivity impact pathway are presented, complemented by two tables summarizing key features and moderating factors. The analysis reveals that cloud-based collaboration tools can improve productivity through reduced coordination costs, richer communication, and tighter workflow integration, but their benefits are contingent on organizational practices, digital skills, and boundary management. The paper concludes with design implications and research directions for building human-centred, productivity-enhancing remote work ecosystems.
